Adjustable Bed Repairs

Woman relaxing in an lp adjustable bed

One of the services that Parris Restorations performs for clients in the tri-state area is adjustable bed repair. We generally repair models only made by Leggett and Platt®, the largest manufacturer of adjustable bed mechanisms.
However, we have also been known to repair Hypac Hydraulic adjustable beds and Electropedic adjustable beds in certain circumstances. If your adjustable bed is not manufactured by one of these companies, or if you do not know the manufacturer of your adjustable bed, feel free to contact us to inquire if we can service your bed. Many times we find our clients are using an adjustable bed in place of a hospital or medical bed. Typically, our clients are under age 60 and have purchased an adjustable bed for comfort and good sleep health, but some of our clients are 60 and older.

When we set out to repair an adjustable bed frame, we always prioritize safety and follow any instructions or guidelines provided by the manufacturer since Parris Restorations is authorized to perform these repairs. It’s wise to seek support from the manufacturer or contact us, rather than attempt any repairs yourself. The most needed repair on adjustable bed frames depends on the specific model. Leggett and Platt® makes models that are exclusive to certain vendors such as The Sleep Number and Saatva adjustable beds. These are very popular adjustable bed models and normally it’s the control box or an actuator motor replacement that is required if service is needed. All of the other models manufactured by Leggett and Platt® are similar, so it is often typically a control box, actuator or a hinge replacement that is required. Some adjustable bed models have a fabric or plastic surround/frame around them, or have an aftermarket frame that prevents a technician from reaching under the bed. So, in the case of a bed that is completely dead, a technician would not be able to lift the bed, or get under them in order to perform the repair, so special measures come into play, in order to replace parts. We do what we have to do, in order to get the job done! In cases like this, before we work we ask the customer to clear out and clean under the bed. On other occasions, we may ask the customer to remove their aftermarket frame in order for us to perform the needed repairs. Learn more about how we repair adjustable beds.

When we set out to repair an adjustable bed frame, we always prioritize safety and follow any instructions or guidelines provided by the manufacturer since Parris Restorations is authorized to perform these repairs.

Repairing an adjustable bed frame can vary depending on the specific issue and the type of adjustable bed frame.  Here is some general information on common adjustable bed frame problems:

Electrical Malfunctions: Your adjustable bed frame has electronic components such as motors for adjusting the position of the bed. Common issues may include motor failure, wiring that is malfunctioning or issues with the control box. In such cases, it’s advisable to consult the manufacturer’s manual for troubleshooting steps or contact customer support for assistance. Sometimes reprogramming the bed is all that is needed. Usually the manufacturer will be able to give you programming instructions over the phone. If the issue persists, you may need to replace the malfunctioning components or contact us to seek professional repair services.

Mechanical Issues: Mechanical problems with adjustable bed frames can range from broken or damaged components to issues with the frame’s movement mechanism. If you notice squeaking, grinding, or sticking when adjusting the bed, it could indicate a problem with the gears, tracks, or other moving parts. Inspect the bed frame for visible signs of damage. You cannot lubricate any parts on an adjustable bed. If the problem persists, consider contacting the manufacturer or contact us for further assistance.

Remote Control Troubleshooting: Your adjustable bed frame will come with either a corded or cordless remote control for adjusting the position of the bed. Issues with the remote control itself, such as battery failure or signal interference, can affect its functionality. Replace the batteries in the remote control and ensure that there are no obstructions blocking the signal between the remote and the bed frame. If the remote control still does not work, consider reprogramming the bed base to the remote or contacting the manufacturer’s customer support for assistance. Replacing the batteries at least every six months is a good idea and will help prevent old leaking batteries from damaging the remote internally.

The average cost of the repair, of an adjustable base, depends on situations such as:

• the size and model of the bed
• if the bed is set-up in a manner that makes it difficult to perform a repair
• the location of the customer.

We’ve never run into a situation where we have to disassemble an adjustable bed base and remove it from the premises;  all of the work is done on site. Approximately 85 – 90% of adjustable base repairs require replacing parts.

We typically run into two (2) types of repair situations:

In the first of two situations, we’ll go on site and troubleshoot the problems, then let the customer know what parts may be needed. The customer can order the parts from the manufacturer and schedule a follow-up appointment for us to install the parts purchased by the customer. All needed replacement parts would need to be ordered from the adjustable base manufacturer by the client. We charge for the troubleshoot appointment and the repair appointment separately.

In the second situation, where ‘minor’ parts are needed, we would usually have these parts available during a service call, such as nuts, bolts, washers, etc….Often it’s a replacement of hinges that is required. The customer will have to purchase hinges from the manufacturer for us to install. Many times, a problem exists because electronics have simply been unplugged, and of course that is easy for us to remedy on the spot. If the bed has lost power for an extended period of time, in some cases 24 hours or longer, depending on the model of the bed, it will need to be reprogrammed. If we can repair the adjustable base in one visit, the customer only pays for the one visit.

Before going on a service call, we often recommend to customers of an adjustable repair, that they call the manufacturer to troubleshoot the bed problem, while on the phone with them. Normally, the manufacturer is right about 90% of the time. If the customer purchases the parts and has them on site when we arrive, the customer will only have to pay us once for a service call. Unfortunately, in some cases the manufacturer might send the wrong part (due to a misdiagnosis), or the part may have been damaged in shipping. In this instance, the parts need to be reordered. We are not responsible in these cases and a service charge will apply since these issues are out of our control, and the parts were purchased from the manufacturer and not us. In a small amount of situations, damage to the remote control is the problem and one can be reordered.

The life of an L&P adjustable bed is generally very long. Buying an adjustable bed is like buying a car: features vary and can range from a stripped down version to one with many luxury features. Warranty repairs usually include parts and labor for the first year. After the first year, customers would be required to pay labor costs. Parts are normally either free or on a prorated basis, all depending on the warranty. We advise customers to read the warranty carefully and be sure to register the bed with the manufacturer as soon as it is delivered. The serial number is needed when and if ordering parts from the manufacturer. Often, the serial number is not on the paperwork but it’s on the frame, in a place that’s unfortunately not easy to read. It’s a good idea to record the number in a secure place when the bed is delivered and set-up.

Repair of Solid Cherry Wood Dining Table Damaged in Shipping

This small, solid cherry wood dining table was sold to the customer for $2,000. During shipping and delivery the bottom of the base sustained two dents. One the size of a quarter, the other the size of a nickel. The wood was dented and the wood fibers were crushed. The company that sold the customer this table contacted me to restore this damage for the customer. This is one of the many repairs that I perform.

First, I filled in the damage area with a filler that will not shrink and is actually harder than the actual wood. I then carefully sanded it. The final outcome is all dependent on the initial preparation. Next, I mixed a stain on site, stained it and re-lacquered the damaged area. After fine tuning the area and applying a couple more coats of lacquer. The repair is complete. The customer was very happy accepting the brand new table that previously arrived damaged.

Antique Victorian Mahogany Setee Restoration

Our client purchased this antique Victorian mahogany with rosewood and mother-of-pearl inlay setee, shown below. at a consignment shop. The beauty, size and stability of the peace was noteworthy. Parris Restorations fully restored and reupholstered the setee with linen fabric and modern stainless nail heads. Our work enhanced the beauty of this peace and gave it a modern update while maintaining the original integrity of the piece. The client was thrilled because it’s difficult to find new furniture that is made with such high quality and workmanship at an affordable price.

The finish was worn in several places. There had been a poor attempt to refinish certain spots. In addition, the upholstery was badly worn.

That was the case for one of our customers, the owner of the fine leather sofa shown below. The beautifully crafted piece had wear and damage that needed to be remedied.
